Jack Keller, a thirty-four year old sign painter was reported
missing by a friend to the Oak Ridge Police Department in the
fall of 1980 The search ended with the discovery of a bullet
riddled human skull and skeletal remains in the Frost Bottom
area of Anderson County, Tennessee months later.
Recovery and positive identification of the remains was made
by Doctor William Bass, state forensic anthropologist and
head of the anthropology department at the University of
Tennessee in Knoxville.
The KKK, a jealous husband, and an
outraged father all became suspects in the execution-style
murder. The investigation was stalled for years as the corrupt
sheriff and his cronies became the target of an F.B.I.
Undercover investigation concerning drug trafficking, bonding
company scams, and kickbacks. The investigation eventually
lead to the sheriff's arrest, conviction, and removal from office.
The newly appointed sheriff assigned Lt. Anthony Callo
(FOSCHINO) to the Keller case and three other unsolved
murders left behind by the former administration. The plan
was to start with the oldest case first, work it until it was
solved, and move on to the next oldest case and do the same.
With countless hours of hard work and a stroke of
unbelievable luck Callo solved the case and arrests were
made in less than a year. The celebration at the sheriff's
office was short lived however, because the DA announced
he would not prosecute the case and would have Callo's
warrants dismissed because an agent with the Tennessee
Bureau of Investigation had an informant who gave a sworn
statement claiming he was present when someone else
committed the killing.
Lt. Callo was forced to release his
prisoners. He was shocked when he learned who the
informant was and whom he claimed was the real killer.
Callo had no doubt he had to prove the informant was lying or
someone was going to get away with murder....
