When I finished my first book, Mountain Revenge I
wanted to give something extra to the reader. My wife,
Vonda suggested a bookmark. I immediately agreed, sat
down at my computer and composed a poem for the
bookmark. I called it "Behind The Badge".
The words seemed to race from my mind to the
keyboard. At first I surprised myself, because in a matter
of just a few minutes I was finished. However, as I sat
there and read what I had written I realized why these
thoughts were so easily put on paper. During my nearly
thirty year career as a police officer I have had each and
every verse shared with me hundreds of times over by my
brother and sister police officers.
I realized that every one of them have experienced a
feeling, deep in their hearts that caused them to believe
many of the people they serve really don't know, and some
really don't care about the emotions they struggle with that
are attached to their chosen profession.
I also realized that everyone of them, if ever asked would
tell you exactly what I have written in my poem.
